Located 688 m above sea level and framed between the Carbonera watercourse and Mount Matxorral, where there are ruins of an old watchtower from the Muslim period, you will find Vilar de Canes, a quiet town surrounded by buildings of yesteryear. Its recent history is linked to events of the Civil War, when Vilar de Canes was bombed in 1938. We highlight its Mediterranean landscape, characterised by holm oaks, almond trees and crop fields. Vilar de Canes offers you a refuge from the world to take a break and rest, with a wide and varied range of tourist accommodation. If you come in the first half of August, Vilar de Canes will welcome you with its patron saint festivities of San Lorenzo.
If you take a walk through this picturesque village, you can visit its beautiful church, as well as the Oil Mill. In the surroundings of the town, you will discover several farmhouses such as La Segarra, a Carlist barracks with a lot of history, the Mas d'en Romeu and the Mas del Señor. If you are interested in recent history, you should know that the events of the Civil War are still very present in this quiet town, since a plaque has been dedicated in tribute to the victims caused in the bombings suffered by different towns of the Maestrazgo by the Condor Legion of the German army. among them Vilar de Canes, as can be seen in the documentary 'Stuka Experiment' (2018), an event that, at the time, changed the course of world history.

He parks at the top of the village, in the Plaça del Vent, and confirms that Vilar de Canes is a town touched by the air. The roofs of some of the houses have large stones that explain the traditional way of holding the tiles.You'll soon notice that there are few historic buildings left in the core. This is due to the bombing of the Civil War. However, as you walk through the core you will stop the pace, find calm again and open your senses to the discovery of the little things.
Vilar de Canes invites you to walk or mountain bike along the "Caminos del Señorío de Vilar de Canes" trail, during which you will discover the traces of history and enjoy the tranquility of the sounds of nature. This route, of great ethnographic richness, can be done in two circular sections and is highly recommended for all ages. You have no excuse! During the almond blossoming season, you will contemplate the beauty of its color and the unmistakable aroma of its flower. You can also take a low-difficulty cycling route that connects Vilar de Canes with Benassal, Culla and the Torre d'En Besora, a route full of medieval footprints, where you will discover the Fuente d'En Segures; Take the opportunity to drink a sip of water!

It will be a pleasure for the senses to taste the black truffle, a delicate crop that is obtained thanks to its privileged environment. The typical dish par excellence of the town is 'la olla al estilo del Maestrazgo', without forgetting its tasty grilled meat. You won't be able to resist trying the grilled lamb accompanied by bread with aioli.
