The Sistine Chapel of the Alt Maestrat in Catí

One of the enigmatic places in Catí, and the one that attracts the most visits, is the hermitage of the Mare de Déu de l'Avellà or Ermita de l'Avellà, a place historically known for the goodness of its waters. The water from l'Avellà is extracted from the well-known spring of the same name, already appreciated by the Arabs. There is documentary evidence of the existence of the fountain for more than 300 years. It was declared of public utility in 1928.

Inside the Hermitage of l'Avellà we find a decorative exuberance that, from the very entrance, is ornamented with gilding and fresco paintings made in 1737 by the artist from Sant Mateu, Pasqual Mespletera, and for which this chapel is known as 'The Sistine Chapel of the Maestrat'. This artist also decorated the Communion Chapel of the church of Catí with similar frescoes. Outside we find the old hostelry, the square and an impressive natural environment, with spectacular views.
