Rogative from Catí to Sant Pere de Castellfort

Send

Every first Saturday and Sunday of May, the residents of Catí and hundreds of companions and walkers walk the circular path that takes them to Sant Pedro de Castellfort, known as Rogativa de Catí a Sant Pere de Castellfort.

The Catí pilgrimage is one of the most deeply rooted in the interior of Castellón. Since the fourteenth century there are written testimonies of this penitential journey that leads the "catinencs" to the hermitage. On Saturday, on the uphill route, the pilgrims cross l'Avellà, La Llècua, the historic centre of Ares del Maestrat and reach their destination through the municipalities of Catí, Morella, Ares and Castellfort.

In the Rogative of Catí to Sant Pere de Castellfort , the processional tradition of accompanying the cross and flags is maintained. The singers sing the 'O Vere Deus' that goes back to other times. One of the most emotional moments is the arrival in Sant Pere, where pilgrims are awaited with copper kettles containing beans and rice.

The pilgrimage of the Rogative from Catí to Sant Pere de Castellfort has many unique elements. The black or brown cloaks that cover the pilgrims and the "barretina" are part of the traditional dress. The same goes for gastronomy. In addition, there is no shortage of fresh cheese from Catí, water from Avellà, cottage cheese, honey, brandy, muscat... In all cases, these foods predate the discovery of America and the absence of meat stands out.
