Culla Festivities

Sant Pere Màrtir and Sant Antoni Abad

While all the municipalities in the province of Castellón usually celebrate Sant Antoni Abad at the beginning of the year, Culla preserves the tradition of celebrating the patron saint of animals in the month of April.

This peculiarity is due to some strong frosts that happened in a cold January at the beginning of the twentieth century. So great were the snowfalls that the inhabitants of the entire municipality of Culla were forced to postpone the date. Since then, the old capital of La Setena has preserved its particular festivity in spring.

To this end, the City Council and the residents of the town are preparing various activities for this celebration, which also coincides with the solemnity of Sant Pere Màrtir. On Friday night, the quintos surround the single girls of the town with the traditional "albaes".

On Saturday at noon the High Mass and procession will take place. A good lunch gives the start to the hundreds of horsemen who will walk through the historic center until the time of the blessing and distribution of the coquette. On Sunday, at the end of the religious acts, it is the time of some of the most deeply-rooted customs of Culla; such as the long-awaited auction or the popular corregudes del Gall.

Pilgrimage to Sant Cristòfol

On Easter Monday of Pentecost, the pilgrimage begins in the morning from the Parish Church to the hermitage and returns in the afternoon, during the journey the children dance the dances called "dels Negrets", before returning, the vehicles are blessed and the "Prima" is distributed. among the attendees.

Prayer to Sant Joan de Penyagolosa

The first records of the procession date back to before the year 1400. The beginning of this type of supplication is always to formulate prayers begging, above all, for rain so that it may provide good harvests, also God's grace, health and peace. It used to be celebrated on the Monday and Tuesday after the feast of the Holy Trinity. Nowadays it takes place on the Friday and Saturday after the feast, the eve of Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi

The ancestral celebration of Corpus Christi is another example of the many traditions and popular customs inseparable from the historical past of this town in the Alt Maestrat.

This festivity surprises the visitor, as it is a manifestation of the richness and variety of local folklore. The Eucharist celebrated in the Church of El Salvador gives way to the processional route through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the majestic "banners" and pedes with saints, the floral altars and the children sounding the traditional "pixurrulls".
